More New Microtunneling Work Ahead
Modern Continental recently won a $6.1 million contract with the Metropolitan Sewer District of Greater Cincinnati to perform some microtunneling and open cut work on the Hopewell Sanitary Sewer. The project involves the installation of about 10,000 feet of 30 and 21-inch pipe for a deep sewer. Roughly 7,000 feet will be handled through microtunneling, and open cut techniques will account for the rest. Modern’s Director of Microtunneling, Frank Nee, said he expects a Notice to Proceed for May 1st.
With the addition of this job, the microtunneling division is now handling roughly $50 million worth of work nationwide. This includes current projects in Atlanta (Indian Creek Drainage Basin), California (Walnut Creek Treatment Plant and the Salt Creek Sewer Interceptor in Chula Vista), and at the Pentagon in Washington, DC. Upcoming projects that are being targeted for bids include a Public Service Gas & Electric job in the New York City/New Jersey area.
Meanwhile, the division continues to expand its capabilities and equipment and monitor the global market for potential work and top talent. Frank and other members of the microtunneling team recently attended the NASTT (North American Society for Trenchless Technology) conference in Las Vegas, NV. "It was interesting to see that a lot of manufacturers at the convention used photos and graphics showing Modern’s jobs," Frank said. "Modern Continental definitely had a strong presence there."
