MCC New York Offers Assistance Following Tragedy

In the wake of this week's tragic terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, a handful of Modern Continental's projects in New York, Boston, and the Washington D.C. area have been affected by delays and, in some cases, indefinite shut-downs. The company has also offered its assistance in the aftermath of one of the most horrible tragedies in American history.

According to Modern Vice President John McNamara, work on the New York office's Long Island Expressway job was ceased almost immediately after the second plane struck the Trade Center just after 9 a.m. on Tuesday. The city itself was - and remains - completely shut off to all non-emergency vehicles and personnel. Around 30 smaller jobs in and around the city being conducted by Spearin, Preston & Burrows, Modern's marine construction specialists, were also shut down.

McNamara reported that work resumed on Thursday, September 13, on the Long Island Expressway Project (with restricted lane closures) as well as on all Spearin Preston and Burrows jobs excluding the Pier 66 site and the JFK Airport site. In addition, all Modern NY heavy equipment remains on standby for use at the site of the World Trade Center.

Modern has offered any and all assistance to the City of New York, and on Tuesday the company sent some 35 light towers to the Trade Center area to help rescue crews who worked into the night looking for survivors. Additionally, a list of available equipment has been sent to the city, the state, the Department of Transportation, and the NY/NJ Port Authority. An emergency number has also been set up for any officials who need to contact the company if they need equipment, operators, or laborers. Thus far, rescue efforts have understandably taken precedence over clean-up and restoration efforts, and Modern's New York office is still waiting to answer the call. Officials have said that it will be 4-5 days before the equipment is needed.

There was no damage reported at Modern's offices in Manhattan, some 30 blocks from the Trade Center, or College Point, NY.

Outside of New York, Modern’s Central Artery/Tunnel construction sites in Boston were closed down for safety concerns following the events of Tuesday, but work has since resumed. While MCC’s Logan Airport Terminal E Upgrade project personnel are back in the office, construction work has been halted and will remain so until Logan itself becomes operational. Modern South’s Southeast Federal Center Seawall Replacement job in Washington DC was also closed down on Tuesday, but has resumed full operation as of Wednesday morning.

The thoughts of everyone throughout Modern Continental goes out to the victims of Tuesday's tragedy and their families.
