MCC Teams with FEMA
Representatives from FEMA,the Federal Emergency Management Agency, have announced that Independent Equipment Leasing, LLP - Modern's affiliate based in Stoughton, MA - will be a source of heavy construction equipment for any future incidents requiring their response. This was in great part set up by Patrick O'Connor, a FEMA team member and a safety representative for Modern's Silver Line project.
"Modern Continental is a great choice for FEMA," Patrick said recently. "The company has a very diverse fleet of equipment; everything we could ever ask for, really. Whether it's a crane to clear debris or a simple backhoe, we know it'll be there." Patrick said the idea initially came up after he made a presentation at a Wednesday night meeting, and that former Safety Director Wayne Rice, now retired, was a key player in striking the agreement.
Patrick, whose team responded to New York City following the September 11th terrorist attacks, knows firsthand how invaluable the right equipment can be when FEMA is trying to perform a rescue and recovery. Modern, in fact, loaned some light towers to rescuers following the World Trade Center tragedy. Patrick's team spent more than a week at Ground Zero.
In addition to making equipment available for emergencies, the company also has agreed to loan out machinery and tools for training exercises. The photos accompanying this story are from a training session at FEMA's Beverly, MA facility on June 15. And should any emergencies arise in the Northeast, the company has also agreed to make top machine operators available to assist FEMA's efforts.
""If there's any way for us to help an organization like FEMA, then of course we'd do anything we can," said Modern President Les Marino. "We're fortunate to have the resources that we do, and nothing could be more important than saving lives."
