New Microtunneling Work in Walnut Creek / San Ramon Valley
Reliable water sources are critical for the residents and businesses that EBMUD serves. EBMUD has started construction on a project to resolve existing water distribution reliability problems that occur in the Walnut Creek / San Ramon Valley area each summer. EBMUD is working to improve its water treatment plant, water transmission pipelines, pumping plant and local distribution facilities from Walnut Creek through Alamo.

In an attempt to help alleviate recurring water shortage problems for parts of Alameda and Contra Costa counties near San Francisco, CA, the East Bay Municipal Utilities District (EBMUD) is undertaking a project to renovate and modernize the Walnut Creek Water Treatment Plant.
As part of this project, Modern Continental crews will construct more than 12,000 linear feet of 69” welded steel pipe. 6000’ will be installed via open cut and cover methods and 6000’ will be constructed within tunnels using three different methods. Modern Continental will mobilize their Herrenknect 2000 mm Microtunnel Boring Machine, which was recently used on the Pentagon project in Arlington, VA, to complete three deep, wet, installations using a single pass method of installation. Modern Continental will also mobilize an Earth Pressure Balance Machine and an Excavator Shield to complete the balance of the tunneling.
This contract was won in September for a bid of just under $25 million. Modern will also be responsible for grouting, mortar lining, and other related work. "This is a great project for Modern," said Bill Maddex, Chief Estimator for the Microtunneling Division. "It's well within our capabilities, and it's an important job that's getting people's attention in the Walnut Creek and San Ramon Valley areas. We're looking forward to the challenge, and know that the successful completion of this contract will even further strengthen Modern Continental's position in the microtunneling industry."
When completed, the Walnut Creek / San Ramon Valley Improvement Project (WC/SRVIP) will enable the Walnut Creek Treatment Plant, an existing facility that will be upgraded, to store and treat water supplies required to meet the needs of existing customers year-round. It will also modernize the storage and handling of water treatment chemicals, ensure that the facilities meet or exceed standards for seismic requirements, and upgrade on-site recycling systems.
Modern, which recently ranked first on Tunnel Business Magazine’s Leading Microtunneling Contractors list for 2001, completed 13,480 linear feet of tunneling work last year. This represents nearly one-fifth of all microtunneling that was completed nation-wide (73,380 linear feet).
