Modern Begins Five New Cambridge MA Projects

Modern Continental is currently handling five contracts within Cambridge – two with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and three with the city.

The MIT jobs include the Vassar Street Utilities project, which should be familiar to employees working at 600 Memorial Dr. Slated for completion within the next couple of months, this project includes the installation of 5,000 LF of ductile iron water piping; 60,000 LF of conduit and duct bank; 3,000 LF of process piping, both welded and flanged; 3,500 LF of draining and sewer piping with depths up to 16 feet; 30 concrete structures tied into the project; railroad crossings and 30,000 square yards of soil management; and extensive traffic and pedestrian management. The project, which was originally awarded at $13 million but increased in scope to $23 million because of MIT’s satisfaction with Modern’s work, has to be completed without interrupting the busy day-to-day activities at the school.

The other MIT project, which will be completed this month, is a fast-track job to install a distribution system for telecommunications capabilities. The job included the installation of 20,000 LF of conduit and duct banks and modifications to eight different structures. Overall, the contract value is $1.3 million.

The Cambridge jobs include improvements to the Bellis Circle and Sherman Street drainage systems, a $3.2 million contract. Crews will be constructing an underground storage tank and pumping station, a force main, a sanitary sewer, storm drains, catch basins, earthen berms, and special drainage structures. Also included is the installation of an 84-inch casing pipe that will be jacked under railroad tracks. All of this work is being done to prevent flooding for the Danehy Park area. Modern’s low bid was just $900 below the second bidder.

Another Cambridge job, slated for completion in June, is a $689,000 project to replace storm pipes at the Fresh Pond reservation. A significant portion of the work will be taking place on the Fresh Pond Golf Course, so crews have been under a tight schedule to complete that part of the job before the season arrives.

Lastly, Modern is also doing work for the city on the Beacon Street drainage system. This job, valued at $5.9 million, involves the installation of two 500-foot storage tanks, pump stations, and 2,000 LF of water mains. Among the additional challenges crews are facing on this project is the busy area that the work is taking place in, with extensive pedestrian and traffic management.
